After graduating from Lincoln-Sudbury in 2005, McElroy attended Yale University. It was there that he began taking biannual trips to the Dominican Republic, staying with host families and making friends with the locals while helping build and grow their communities. After graduating Yale in 2009 he wanted to continue his work there and began Yspaniola with three classmates. Since then the organization has sent six students to universities, built water latrines and women’s centers, and created an internship program for both American students looking to get involved and local Dominican and Haitian students.
